Powerful storm system slams Midwest, moving toward East Coast

"It sounded like more than one freight train out together. I've never heard a sound like that in my whole life," said another resident.

"Petrifying. Your house shakes, and you think it's going to come off. You hear glass breaking. Started praying, crying, thinking about your family," one Iowan said.

A line of powerful storms is churning near the Great Lakes, and at least 10 tornadoes have been reported, including in Avoca, Iowa, where an EF-1 tornado blasted the state Wednesday along with a dangerous mix of heavy rain and violent wind, CBS News' Adriana Diaz reports.

The winds are also heading east to the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and the Northern Plains. The winds will be strongest in the afternoon and could reach 60 mph.

The storm system stretched to Missouri, fueling lightning strikes over Chicago and blowing the roof off homes in Kansas.

The same severe storm system dumped more than a foot of snow in parts of the Rockies and blanketed roads in Nebraska.

In Oklahoma, wind gusts of 60 mph whipped several wildfires out of control, burning down homes and forcing evacuations as firefighters struggled to keep up with the flames.

"It's gone, so now, you know, all I could do is I go to fix it," said a Kansas resident whose home was destroyed.

"The wind was originally out of the west, then started blowing to the east, and it didn't matter what we did, we weren't going to stop the fire," a fire chief said.

The howling winds toppled trees, tore down power lines and flipped over semi-trucks. People who live in the area were shaken.

House leader wants review of 9/11 bill that would let Americans sue Saudis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan did not immediately endorse a Senate bill on Tuesday that would allow Americans to sue the government of Saudi Arabia over the Sept. 11 attacks, saying it should be reviewed to ensure it would not hurt diplomatic relations.

With President Barack Obama traveling to Saudi Arabia Tuesday, lawmakers have been discussing the "Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act," which passed the Senate Judiciary Committee in January but has not been scheduled for debate in the full Senate or the House of Representatives.

"I think we need to review it to make sure that we're not making mistakes with our allies and that we're not catching people in this that shouldn't be caught up in this," Ryan, a Republican, told reporters.

Some U.S. citizens whose relatives were killed in the 2001 attacks want to be able to sue Saudi Arabia because most of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals. The al Qaeda militant group, then based in Afghanistan, was blamed and the United States and its allies invaded the country. No U.S. investigation to date has reported finding evidence of Saudi government support for the attacks.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama did not support the legislation and would not sign it. Obama will seek to reassure Gulf allies about Washington's support on his trip.

Some lawyers working with the Sept. 11 victims' families have insisted that the bill would come up for a vote quickly and easily pass Congress. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, said no vote has been scheduled. Senate aides said there was at least one Republican "hold" on the http://www.mayflower.com/moving-services measure.

"I'm still looking at it," McConnell told reporters, calling the measure an "important" bill.

BILL NOT FINALIZED

Republican Senator Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said lawmakers and the Obama administration were trying to resolve concerns about whether individuals should be able to sue foreign governments.

"There are some sovereign immunity issues that need to be worked through," Corker said. He declined to comment on whether he supported the legislation, because the bill has not been finalized.

The New York Times reported on Friday that Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told U.S. lawmakers his country would be forced to sell up to $750 billion in U.S. assets in response to the bill if it passed.

Several members of Congress and senior aides said they were unaware of any such threat, outside of the newspaper's report.

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, a lead bill sponsor said the Saudis had not talked to him about that threat. But he, and other senior Democrats said they wanted the bill to move ahead despite the White House's objections.

"If the Saudi government was complicit in terrorism, and a trial so determines, it would be a real deterrent to other governments not to be complicit in terrorism," said Schumer, who represents New York, the state hardest hit in the attacks.

Corker said he had been in close contact with the administration, but had not discussed the bill with Saudi officials for some time. Ryan said the bill did not come up while he was on a visit to Riyadh.



Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee who supports the bill, said it was tied up by State Department concerns about sovereign immunity.

"I think Americans need some redress when they're hurt."

Question about my dog's strange, erratic behaviour since moving house...?

I understand the move most likely stressed him out, but we spend more time with him now than ever before and it doesn't seem like enough, he still wants more time with us. He literally follows you everywhere http://www.myguysmovingvab.com/ even when he is asleep he will wake if he hears you getting up to even go to the ensuite and walk over and try to go in the toilet with you.

Can you please give any suggestions or advice you think could help? Thank you.



The Vets only suggestion is that he is unsettled from moving house, but it's been over a month now and his behaviour seems to be increasing rather than settling down.

I'm concerned about the behaviour, namely, staring at walls, barking randomly during the night and growling at the floor. I'm home alone most nights, and worry he is hearing someone/something outside, or it's not and I won't believe him if there ever is someone trying to get in when he acts strange like this most of the time now.

We recently moved house and our dog's behaviour has changed dramatically.

He no longer seems interested in his food (but he eats when you hand feed him) - we have taken him to the vets regarding this twice and they can find nothing wrong), he barks and seems skittish, he will be sleeping and suddenly wake and walk to the other side of the room - or out down the hall - then walk back and go back to sleep again (like wanders aimlessly and looks around the room). He also stares at walls in a very "protective" stance with his tail pointed out like an antenna (has his nose 30cm away from the wall), has started growling when he sniffs the floor and seems generally unsettled. He has an odd fascination with our walk in robe and always stares into but rarely walks in. We have two spare rooms and he does not like to go into unless you are in the room and ask him to come to you. The house is brand new in a brand new development area, so no previous owners/tenants.

Mother’s moving obit goes viral after daughter’s OD death



One mothers heart-warming eulogy is going viral after her 23-year-old daughter died of a heroin overdose.



With stark honesty, Kathleen Errico spoke about her daughters struggle with addiction and accidental overdose.



Kelsey Grace Endicott died April 2, according to her obituary.



The eulogy Errico delivered at the funeral recalled her daughters sparkling diamond eyes" and witty dry humor.



It is easy to see why anyone who met Kelsey instantly fell in love. She was an old soul for such a young woman and a complete throwback which made you love her even more, the mourning mother said.



In a eulogy she later posted to Facebook, by popular request, Endicott detailed her daughters struggles.



Her reality was that with those sparkling eyes, she never saw what the rest of us saw. She looked in her own distorted mirror, she wrote, detailing Endicotts doubts and self-esteem problems.



Her addiction told her she wasnt worthy or deserving. She turned to drugs to make her feel normal like everyone else.



Heroin told her I can make you feel accepted, I can make you feel alright, I can make you feel worthy.



What it didnt tell her was how it would devastate her family and tear it apart, how it would take her http://www.movers.com/ job and leave her penniless, how it would steal her son from her arms, how it would take her home, how it would take her sparkle, how it would take her smile, how it would take her humor and how it would take and take and take until it took her life.



The Haverhill woman had been in and out of rehabs for nearly two years by the time she died.



Kelsey had just 10 months shy of sobriety and was due to move home in two months but God had other plans. He saw her constant struggle and decided to finally let her find peace, her mother said.



When Kelseys obituary was written my intention for it was to tell the truth in the hopes that maybe it could help even just one other person. Little did I know how it would implode. There were complete strangers that came to her wake because they were in our shoes and just wanted to reach out.



She said that she hoped to spread awarness and educate people about the heroin epidemic and described her daughters death as a win for addiction awareness.



My baby girl may not be here physically but she is working miracles from Heaven and as her mother I couldnt be more proud.

"All enrolled agents specialize in taxation. All of our education is focused on tax law. We are governed by the Department of the Treasury as opposed to the individual states. We can work with clients no matter what state they live in because we have a federal license," says Bailey, who has been a tax professional since 2007 and an enrolled agent since 2012. If you opt to go the DIY route, you can also use tax software such as TurboTax.

"If a business owner doesn't meet the requirements, they'll have to amend the return in which they took the deduction or add it as income on their current year's return," says Bailey, who also notes that there are exceptions to the test.

Q: Sorry, I didn't have in mind sound proofing but if a set is too live for your voices, shouldn't you have a rough idea what frequencies your blankets will absorb rather than diffuse? And how do you measure that, how many blankets do you put up, first time on that set?

A: From a post perspective you probably cant make it too dead. If you sound post is all going to be in FCP or another NLE then I would try to avoid REALLY dead but you don't have much chance of ever getting a set dead, there is just too much other stuff around.

Q: Hi all, just read thru and couldn't find any refs. to....shouldn't you find out what frequencies the 'blankets' attenuate before ordering. Custom designed sound foam and tiles refer to certain frequencies for users to specify.

If any of the these blankets attenuate the mid voice range, then they could be trouble?

A: The blankets are not for sound proofing but diffusion. A lot of things work to do this including the human body but blankets are the most convenient tool that can be taken from set to set easily.

Q: So, next question, once you have the large thick movers blankets, what is the best way to suspend them. Would you use light stands with a "knuckle" (I think thats what it is called) or some other type of special clamp, or would you use a background setup with a pole stretched between two stands and then suspend the blanket from the pole? Or would you only drape the blankets around the room. I should have prefaced this with the situation is that you are shooting an interview in a room with poor acoustics.

If suspending the blankets gives better sound, what is the best way to do it?

A: What really makes the difference, is the surface area the blanket covers, and the distance from the speaker. As sound leaves a speakers mouth, the closer the blanket is to them, the less surfaces the noise can be reflected off before it gets absorbed by the blanket. Back in our old office, we used a small tiled bathroom as a vocal booth for doing music recordings. Normally, this would be a nightmare acoustically. But we hung a sleeping bag (inside out) covering the entire wall the singers were facing. All the sound projected in that direction would be absorbed, and the recordings really came out great sounding in there.

Okay, now that I have gotten that off my chest, let's get to the topic at hand - moving blankets. Yes, moving blankets work well as sound blankets. But, you want the good, thick ones, not the thin ones. And, if you have an option, get them in both light and dark colors. Your lighting team will thank you.

Q: I understand the usefulness if not necessity of having so-called "sound blankets" to absorb sound, especially with my less than ideal mics etc.. I know that there are special blankets made of special materials and that's what you pros probably use. And I know they cost a way more than I can afford.

Here's my question: Can I get reasonable (not necessarily best possible) results just using inexpensive quilted furniture moving pads? I don't see why I can't just get a few of these and add some grommets so that I can hang them if I want to. They might not be the best at deadening sound (stopping reflections), but the large thick type should certainly help the acoustics in many indoor situations.

A: Yes, movers blankets are fine, provided they are thick like. Acoustic treatment is one area where I dont place a whole heap of value in buying specialist products (at least, not for on set applications). I say this because having a carpeted room in a quiet neighborhood with some soft furniture (beds/couches) inside is often enough to give good results if the correct mic choice is made (here Im not talking make and model, but polar pattern), and that mic is put in an appropriate place. And when you DO get optimal recording conditions, then your audio sounds INCREDIBLE.

Harry Reid Busts Up Senate Precedent

The move raises all sorts of questions: Why would the Republicans, rather than the Democrats, be insisting on having the vote that the president has been demanding for weeks? What does Reid's move say about the filibuster? And why is the Senate debating a bill on Chinese currency anyway, one that the White House opposes and stands little chance in the House?

"What just took place here is an effort to expedite what goes on around here," Reid said, although he admitted he could be wrong.

McConnell moved to suspend the rules and shift debate over to the American Jobs Act. Reid argued that doing so amounted to another filibuster, because it required 60 votes to move back to the original bill, and so therefore was out of order. Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska), who happened to be the presiding officer at the time, asked the Senate parliamentarian what he thought. The parliamentarian advised Begich that McConnell's motion was in order.

WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) led Democrats in a precedent-setting move on Thursday evening, shutting down an effort by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to hijack the floor and force the chamber to move away from debate on Chinese currency manipulation and instead vote on President Obama's American Jobs Act.

"We accepted the embarrassing vote on the president's jobs bill," a Democratic source said. "Then he tried to jam the farm dust bill up our ass."

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) later tweeted that Reid's move to rein in McConnell was "tyranny."



McConnell then apparently settled on a consolation prize of forcing the Democrats to take tough post-cloture votes, including on the president's jobs bill and on a measure to bar the EPA from regulating farm dust.

With the chair overruled, McConnell's motion was declared out of order, setting a narrow precedent that motions to suspend the rules are out of order during a post-cloture period.

That left the Democratic leaders in a sour mood to begin with, but then McConnell tried to insist on the farm dust measure offered by Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.).

"Graham and Sessions went and whipped behind McConnell's back, and they got people to switch," a staffer said.

McConnell initially wanted 10 votes, and Democrats were willing to give him five. They ultimately settled on seven, a Democratic source said, and they told McConnell which ones they would accept.

"McConnell likes to think of himself as a parliamentary wizard, but he had his lunch eaten twice today by Harry Reid," said a Senate Democratic aide.

The collision was set up after McConnell confidently predicted Wednesday night that the China currency measure would fail.

Reid's move Thursday, in that context, is less abusive of Senate precedent than it first appears. The current rules create a situation in which two 60-vote thresholds must be met before a bill can pass, the first to end debate and the second to move to final passage. McConnell's move to suspend the rules could have created additional 60-vote hurdles, clearly in violation of the spirit of the post-cloture period, which is intended to be a short stretch until moving to final passage.

But sources familiar with negotiations over the vote said McConnell failed to account for how determined some of his own members were to pass the currency measure, including Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) -- both of whom have industries in their states harmed by China's trade edge.

The EPA, however, has insisted the entire issue of regulating farm dust is a "myth." The agency has proposed toughening the standards to regulate particulate matter in the air.

Senate Republicans, aware that some Democrats facing reelection are unwilling to vote for a jobs package that includes tax hikes on the wealthy, wanted to stage a vote to demonstrate the lack of party unity. But the chamber had already voted to move forward on a bill aimed at curtailing Chinese currency manipulation, which depresses the price of Chinese imports and hurts American manufacturers. That meant the chamber was in what's known as a post-cloture period.

A spokesman for McConnell argued that Democrats only took the dramatic step to avoid embarrassment, and were trying to spin the developments as principled. McConnell, he said, always intended to try to have the extra votes.

Reid then appealed the ruling, following a script that advocates of ending the filibuster wrote long ago. What some senators call the "constitutional option," and what others call the "nuclear option," involves as a first step appealing a ruling that a filibuster is in order. The second step is to defeat a motion to table that appeal, which is exactly what happened next, with all but one Democrat sticking with Reid. (Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) voted against Reid; Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) didn't vote.)
